Our Proud History

On September 30, 1958, residents from 13 rural Class 1 school districts in Sarpy County, Nebraska, overwhelmingly voted to merge into a single Class III school district. With a remarkable 70% voter turnout and a 6-to-1 margin in favor, the vote laid the foundation for what would become Springfield Platteview Community Schools.

Just months later, on April 2, 1959, the community took another significant step forward, approving an $890,000 bond issue with 85% support. The bond provided funding to acquire land and construct a new junior/senior high school. Platteview Junior/Senior High School opened in 1960 and began a new era of education for students throughout the district.

In the decades since, Springfield Platteview Community Schools has continued to grow and evolve alongside the communities it serves. New schools have opened, existing facilities have been expanded and modernized, and learning spaces have changed to meet the academic, career, extracurricular, safety, and technology needs of new generations of students.

Facility & District Timeline

• 1958: Residents of 13 rural Class 1 school districts vote to form a single Class III school district.
• 1959: Voters approve an $890,000 bond issue to acquire land and construct a new junior/senior high school.
• 1960: Platteview Junior/Senior High School opens.
• 1964: Springfield Elementary School opens.
• 1969: A band room is added to Platteview High School.
• 1973: The north classroom section and library are added to Platteview High School.
• 1977: Springfield Elementary undergoes an addition, and a small gymnasium is added to Platteview High School.
• 1978: Westmont Elementary School opens.
• 1980: Platteview Central Junior High School opens.
• 1991: A vocational education area is added to Platteview High School.
• 2000: LaPlatte Elementary, originally built in 1955, closes due to declining enrollment and funding.
• 2004: Platteview High School undergoes a major expansion, adding a 1,400-seat gymnasium, 600-seat auditorium, vocational education wing, band room, weight room, and student commons.
• 2018: A major demolition and renovation project updates approximately 33,000 square feet of Platteview Central and 7,500 square feet of Platteview High School, including classrooms, administrative offices, science labs, and other learning spaces.
• 2022: A new Springfield Elementary School opens at 940 Main Street, accompanied by improvements at Westmont Elementary School.
• 2022: Platteview High School completes renovations that include an updated Strength and Fitness area.
• 2023: The former Springfield Elementary building at 765 Main Street is renovated and opens as the SPCS Administration Building. The former district administration building is transformed into an Athletic Building with a baseball batting cage, wrestling mats, golf simulators, and flexible training space.
• 2026: Voters approve a $79.9 million bond issue with no increase to the tax levy rate. The bond represents another significant investment in the district’s future, addressing safety and security, facility needs, educational spaces, and anticipated community growth.
• 2026–2028: Improvements at Platteview High School and Platteview Central include new and renovated science, Career and Technical Education, classroom, commons, entrance, and other educational spaces.
• Future: A new elementary school is planned in the growing Oak Leaf area near 72nd Street and Capehart Road to help accommodate future enrollment growth.

Building on Our History

From the consolidation of 13 rural school districts in 1958 to the investments being made in our schools today, the history of Springfield Platteview Community Schools is closely tied to the communities we serve.

Generations of students, families, educators, staff members, Board of Education members, and community supporters have helped shape SPCS. While our buildings, programs, and communities have changed over the years, the purpose behind those investments has remained consistent: providing exceptional educational opportunities for every student while preparing for the generations still to come.
