Platteview Central Student Earns First Place in Statewide NEST 529 Writing Contest
Springfield Platteview Community Schools is proud to celebrate 8th grade Platteview Central student, Ashleigh Hopp, for earning first place in the NEST 529 “Why I Want to Go to College” writing contest for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District.
This annual contest, hosted by the Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office in partnership with the Omaha Storm Chasers, invites students to reflect on their future goals and the value of education through a written essay.
A Top Honor
Ashleigh earned the top honor among entries in District 2, distinguishing herself through her thoughtful and well-crafted essay. As the first place winner, she has been awarded $2,000 to be deposited into a NEST 529 college savings account, supporting her future educational goals.
Winners will also be recognized at an Omaha Storm Chasers game this May, celebrating their achievements in front of the community.
In her essay, Ashleigh reflected on three key motivations for attending college: gaining a strong education, building social connections, and learning to live independently. Her perspective captured both the academic and personal growth that higher education can provide.
From the Classroom
Daylene Gray, 8th Grade Language Arts teacher at Platteview Central, shared, “Eighth grade is a time of change, where students begin thinking ahead and preparing for what comes next. Opportunities like the NEST 529 Writing Contest give students a chance to share their voice beyond the classroom. I always encourage students to apply because it helps build confidence and shows them that their ideas truly matter. Ashleigh’s essay really stood out because it was clear, thoughtful, and had a strong voice. She shared her ideas in a way that was easy to follow and engaging, and you can tell how much effort she put into it.”
Celebrating Student Participation
Platteview Central was well represented in this year’s contest, with several students submitting entries. A special thank you goes to Mrs. Gray for encouraging students to take part and for assisting with the submission process.
Achievements like this highlight the talent, dedication, and potential of Platteview Central students.
Congratulations to Ashleigh on this outstanding accomplishment!
