SPCS in Action: Supporting Students Through the Caring Closet

Creating a supportive environment for students goes beyond academics. At Westmont Elementary School, Student Council members recently helped reorganize and restock the Caring Closet, ensuring it is ready to serve students who may need a little extra support.

Located in the cafeteria, the Caring Closet provides staff with access to everyday necessities as well as comfort items for students who may be going through a difficult time. Teachers and paraprofessionals may retrieve items for a student or bring the student along to select something. (Students are not permitted to access the space independently.)

The Caring Closet is designed to complement classroom supports, not replace them. While teachers may already have their own systems such as a “Blue Dish of Fun,” the Caring Closet serves as an additional resource when a student may need a pick-me-up, essential items, or a small reminder that someone cares.

This initiative reflects the compassion and leadership of our students, as well as the district’s commitment to meeting the whole-child needs of every learner.

Staff members are encouraged to share suggestions for additional items that may benefit students. Through small acts of kindness and thoughtful support, our schools continue to create environments where every student feels seen, supported, and valued.
