Each April, Springfield Platteview Community Schools joins schools and communities across the country in celebrating the Week of the Young Child, a special time dedicated to our youngest learners and the people who support them every day. This year, our Early Childhood classrooms celebrated April 11 through 17.

While this week provides a meaningful opportunity to highlight early learning, at SPCS, it also reflects something bigger. The experiences, relationships, and learning opportunities we celebrate during this week are part of a year-round commitment to supporting young children and their development.

Why Early Childhood Education Matters

The early years of a child’s life are a critical time for growth and development. During this stage, children build the foundation for learning, relationships, communication, and problem-solving.

Young children learn best through hands-on experiences, play, creativity, and meaningful interactions with others. These early experiences help develop confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

While the Week of the Young Child focuses on children from birth through age 8, the impact of high-quality early learning extends far beyond these years and continues to shape future success.

How We Celebrated

Throughout the week, our Early Childhood classrooms participated in themed days designed to make learning engaging, meaningful, and fun:

  • Music Monday: Exploring rhythm, movement, and self-expression through music
  • Tasty Tuesday: Learning through cooking, nutrition, and hands-on experiences
  • Work Together Wednesday: Building teamwork, cooperation, and social skills
  • Artsy Thursday: Encouraging creativity and imagination through art
  • Family Friday: Celebrating the important role families play in a child’s learning and development

These experiences reflect how young children learn best and mirror the types of activities and interactions that take place in our classrooms throughout the entire year.
