Understanding Attendance: What Families Need to Know
We know that attendance policies can sometimes feel unclear or even overwhelming. Our goal is to make things simple, transparent, and easy to navigate so families feel confident, not confused, about what to expect.
At Springfield Platteview Community Schools, attendance is about more than rules. It is about keeping students connected to learning, relationships, and a sense of belonging. When questions come up, we want families to feel comfortable reaching out and working with us.
This guide is designed to help clarify how attendance works and how we can support your child along the way.
Excused vs. Unexcused Absences
Excused Absences
These are absences for valid reasons that are communicated to the school. Common examples include:
- Illness or medical appointments
- Family emergencies
- Religious observances
- School-approved activities
Unexcused Absences
These occur when:
- The school is not notified, or
- The reason does not meet school guidelines
If you are ever unsure, just reach out. Communication helps us support your child and ensure attendance is recorded correctly.
Partial Days Still Count
Attendance is not only about full days. Instruction happens throughout the entire day, and even small amounts of missed time can impact learning.
Here is how partial attendance is typically counted:
- Tardies (arriving late) = missed instructional time
- Early pickups (leaving early) = missed instructional time
- Partial-day absences may count depending on how much time is missed
While a single late arrival or early pickup may not seem significant, these minutes can add up over time.
How to Report an Absence
Clear communication is one of the most important parts of attendance. If your child will be absent, please notify your school as soon as possible.
You can report an absence by:
- Calling the school office
- Sending an email
- Using your school’s attendance reporting system (if available)
Providing a reason allows us to accurately record the absence and offer support if needed.
Our Approach
Our goal is not to be punitive. We are here to support students and families.
- We focus on connection, not punishment
- We communicate early when concerns arise
- We work with families to find solutions
When we work together, students are more likely to stay engaged, supported, and successful.
